    3. "As things stand, I remain the majority shareholder at the Club and will always
have the best interests of Rangers at heart but it is time to pass on the
    Chairman's baton.

Ist das nur der erster Schritt und der Verkauf des Clubs steht noch überhaupt nicht an oder ist er in dem Bereicht schon wesentlich weiter?

    :rfc: Simply a Bear :rfc:

  • Wow, damit hätte ich jetzt aber so plötzlich nicht gerechnet....muss das auch erstmal sacken lassen. Murray hat schon sehr viele Verdienste für unseren KLub, aber gut, dass er Platz macht für jemand neuen..... :nuke:

  • Also ich habe es so verstanden, dass Murray lediglich seine Aufgaben abgibt, aber weiterhin Besitzer bleibt. Zumindest vorerst, denn ein Verkauf wäre wohl der nächste, und auch logischste Schritt.....

    Murray Ends Glorious Reign

SIR David Murray's incredible Ibrox reign has come to an end as he has announced he is to step down as a Board Director and Chairman of Rangers Football Club.

He will be succeeded as Chairman of the Club by Alastair Johnston, a Director of the Club for the last five years, however he remains the majority shareholder.

Following Sir David's announcement today, the Board of the Club said it is considering proposals to formally recognise his outstanding contribution to Rangers.

Sir David said: "For the last 20 years I have been actively involved in the Club on an almost daily basis and I think that now is the right time to take a step back.

"I have said many times that being the Chairman of Rangers is not something anyone should do forever and I have personal and business interests outside the Club I would like to pursue.

"As things stand, I remain the majority shareholder at the Club and will always have the best interests of Rangers at heart but it is time to pass on the Chairman's baton.

"For me personally, it has been a tremendous honour and privilege to serve as Chairman of Rangers. There have been so many great moments to savour and it is particularly gratifying to step down when the Club are reigning SPL champions, Scottish Cup holders and about to embark on another exciting journey in the UEFA Champions League.

"The Club has the governance and management in place, both in footballing and business terms, to deliver further success in the future and Rangers can go forward with confidence.

"I would also like to salute the countless Rangers fans around the world who have shown unwavering support for the Club, week in week out. They are the lifeblood of Rangers and many clubs would dearly like to have such a great support.

"I am delighted that Alastair Johnston has accepted the chairmanship. He is an internationally renowned and respected businessman and will be an excellent servant to the Club."

Glasgow-born Alastair Johnston is a graduate of the University of Strathclyde and Vice-Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of IMG, the leading international sports and entertainment group.

Alastair first met IMG Founder, Mark H McCormack, in 1968 and apart from a short spell as a chartered accountant with Arthur Andersen and Company has worked with IMG for 37 years.

His roles within the group have included Chief Operating Officer of Arnold Palmer Enterprises and Head of IMG's worldwide golf operations. When Mark McCormack passed away in 2003, he was appointed co-Chief Executive Officer of IMG overseeing all the company's global businesses, conducted by over 2,500 employees located in more than 60 offices spread throughout the world.

Alastair divides his time between the United States and Scotland and advises The R&A of St Andrews in terms of marketing the sponsorship and worldwide media rights to the Open Golf Championship.

He is a lifelong Rangers fan and became a Director of the Club in February 2004. Alastair is also a recognised expert of golf history and among his charitable interests is a family bursary to support youth initiatives in the Glasgow Battalion of the Boy's Brigade.

He said: "David richly deserves his place in the Rangers history as one of the Club's greatest Chairmen and his passion has burned brightly for 20 years. He invested heavily in the Club but has also demonstrated enormous personal commitment at all times.

"On behalf of all Rangers supporters I wish him the very best for the future.

"I consider it a great honour to be appointed Chairman of the Club and can say to our supporters that the board, management and staff will spare no effort in striving to ensure that Rangers Football Club enjoys a successful future."

    # Johnston lives in the USA. Will he be an absentee chairman?

Johnston regularly visits Scotland. He attends at least 8-10 matches a season and is available for the four or five board meetings. His mother still lives in the country and Johnston visits her from his home in Florida. He is believed to be in Scotland at least once a month. His attendance at board meetings now is guaranteed but the running of Rangers can be conducted through the means of telecommunications. Murray, after all, was not at Ibrox everyday. Martin Bain will liaise closely with Johnston on business matters and Walter Smith will retain his strong say on team matters.

    # Is Johnston up to the job?

Undoubtedly. At 61, he has moved in the top reaches of sports business almost since he met Mark McCormack at Carnoustie in 1968 and started working with IMG. His areas of expertise are sports branding and merchandising. The poor returns from the recent TV deal after Setanta's collapse will be exercising his mind.

    # And is Johnston a Rangers fan?

His cars bear the registration RFC1 and 1BROX. He joined the board at the same time as John Greig, who is his hero. And now one of his biggest mates.

  • To whom it may concern ...

    Sir David Murray

Chairman of Rangers F.C. for nigh 21 years

Under his reign, Rangers F.C. won 32 trophies!

    Love him or hate him,

    He'll be a Rangers Legend!

  • Absolut!

  • EXCLUSIVE: News on club takeover..

Vital Rangers understands that Rangers new chairman Alastair Johnston has been placed in the role at the request of Rangers` prospective new owners.

Sir David Murray`s relinquishing of the chairman`s position this week has given the strongest hint yet that the strongly-rumoured takeover that has been the talk of the terraces for many months now is on the verge of completion.

The clap-trap about wanting to spend time on other ventures isn`t entirely false on Murray`s part, but for a man who has been virtually anonymous in recent years to try and convince those who can see past the media spin that we still somehow take up so much of his precious time is outright laughable. Murray already has a back-seat - that`s why we have Martin Bain.

Mr Johnston will assume the role of chairman for a new owner in the fullness of time - to suggest that this is "McLelland mkII" is somewhat misguided.

It is believed that Murray has finally accepted he will not recoup the kind of fee he has held out for over the years, and that a bid of as low as £20 million could be more than enough for the deal to complete, hence the upturn in activity recently.

Alastair Johnston`s North-American firm IMG, of whom he is vice-chairman, are strongly rumoured to be involved in the takeover, with the huge-firms potential involvement likely to make the difficult prospect of attracting investors to Rangers and Scottish Football a marginally easier problem.

There is no timescale on how or when the deal will be complete, hopefully in time for January to allow for movement in the transfer market.
