  • So Walter, jetzt bist Du fällig! :knueppel::D

    Das war die gestrige Aufstellung:

    Alexander

    Dailly - McCulloch - Weir - Whittaker

    Davis - Edu - Mendes - Smith

    Velicka - Boyd

    :rfc: Simply a Bear :rfc:

  • Ally So Proud

ALLY MCCOIST praised his players after they showed their battling qualities to win the Scottish Cup and secure a domestic double at Hampden.

After a stunning season in which the SPL trophy was also brought back to Ibrox the players in Light Blues fought against soaring temperatures to get a 1-0 win against a stubborn Falkirk side.

Super sub Nacho Novo's sensational strike a minute in to the second-half proved enough on the day and McCoist was understandably thrilled.

He said: "I thought our boys showed a fantastic level of commitment but credit must go to Falkirk for the way they played.

"They worked very hard and we had to dig deep to stay in it at times, the conditions were very tough out there.

"But after winning the league we knew we had to come to Hampden and get the win, that was all we wanted to do.

"We would have loved to have played our best football but the most important thing was the result.

"We have had an incredible season and everyone in the squad has had to come in and done their bit.

"Today we had injuries to Mo and Pedro which meant that Barry and big Lee were in the starting eleven and at the end of the game we even had Christian up front.

"So this season has been a real squad effort and I couldn't be prouder of what we have achieved.

"It has been a rollercoaster ride at times but we have finished up with two trophies and that is great for everyone, including our fans who were brilliant again today.

"We can now enjoy a break and our boys have earned that; in the past two weeks they have been magnificent and I can't praise them enough."

  • WE'RE IN A MESS

RANGERS boss Walter Smith last night admitted he fears for the future of Scottish football.

The Ibrox gaffer is extremely concerned about the lack of cash around the Scottish top flight and the talent drain that has seen a host of promising young players disappear to England over the past few years.

Smith insists sides outwith the Old Firm can no longer compete with the wages on offer in the English Championship and has worries about where the next generation of new stars is going to come from.

With Scotland’s automatic place in the Champions League group stage going out the window next term, that could see further revenue taken away from the game after the recent problems over TV money.

Broadcaster Setanta’s collapse saw a £125million four-year deal go down the pan to be replaced by a £65m, five-year agreement with Sky and ESPN. Smith said: “The most difficult aspect for Scottish teams is finance.

“It’s going to be extremely difficult for us and we have lost a lot of TV money.

“We still have Sky and ESPN, of course, but it’s going to be difficult for clubs to bring in players and even the youth policies are going to be stretched to the limit.

“A lot of strain will be put on them to bring young players through.

“We’ve got a few years ahead that may be difficult ones.

“Next season alone we are going to have to pre-qualify for the Champions League – no matter who wins the title.

“If there’s no money from television and no other source, transfer money would be affected.

“Recently, Rangers and Celtic have bought a lot of Scottish players and we are now running out of players to buy. Everyone is going down south.

“We’ve got to a situation where teams in the Championship in England can pay far more money than all the Scottish clubs outwith Rangers and Celtic.

“Even our good professional players are leaving to go to the Championship because our clubs can’t afford to pay them.”

Smith and other senior figures worry about the SPL ending up like the League of Ireland if things don’t take a turn for the better.

What’s more, Smith doesn’t see any foreign investors offering any kind of bail-out either.

Manchester City are currently being bankrolled by the Abu Dhabi royal family, while Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich has poured fortunes into Chelsea.

“It’s a trend that’s come for bigger clubs in bigger countries,” said Smith.

“People are only going to do that with clubs they are going to achieve a profile with and I don’t think you’ll find that happening in Scotland.”

Meanwhile, the SFA has warned the Government that restricting Scotland’s home internationals to free-to-air broadcasters will threaten the existence of the game.

SFA chief executive Gordon Smith, above, made the stark warning in a letter to David Davies, chairman of the Government’s Review of Listed Events.

Smith claims putting Scotland games on the protected list, which includes the Scottish Cup Final, could cost the SFA £12million a year.

Scotland’s home games are currently screened live by Sky, with BBC Scotland showing highlights later.

Smith said: “Should our ability to go to an open media market be restricted, the shortfall to Scottish football could be up to £12m per annum.

“Scottish football can’t afford to lose this amount of money and be expected to continue to exist in the future.”

    Progressing Nicely

WALTER SMITH'S new 4-3-3 formation worked a treat again as Rangers ran out 3-2 winners over free-spending Manchester City.

Now the Boss is hoping that it means Rangers will be a more potent force when the season gets underway on August 15.

He said: "It was a good game and there were a number of positives for us. With both making a lot of changes in the second half it became very open.

"I felt we were a little bit slow to start but once we scored we started to impose ourselves on the game. We went down a little after Manchester City equalised but they are a good side and they have good players.

"But overall I was delighted. We passed the ball well and we created a number of good opportunities so in its entirety it was a good night for us.

"Nacho had just missed one before he scored to put us ahead but you get that with strikers.

"We are trying something different in the way we are playing this season and there have been some definite pluses for us. We have been doing very well and we will keep working at it.

"We feel it will result in us scoring more goals so we want to keep working at it to make sure that happens when the season gets underway.

"It was a terrific goal which gave us the equaliser after we went 2-1 down. It was a great ball in and a great finish from Kenny and I felt we deserved it at that stage.

"And it was great to see big Davie score the winner. He was delighted even if it was a friendly game."

With Neil Alexander, Miller, Stevie Naismith and Steven Whittaker all reporting for Scotland duty tomorrow night, Smith has to change the team for Saturday at Portsmouth.

He said: "Allan McGregor will get 90 minutes at Portsmouth on Saturday and we have another closed door game on Monday for those who maybe need more game time so our preparations are going well.

"We will have to change the team around a bit at Portsmouth but that will give the lads who have not been playing an opportunity to play"

:nuke:

    :rfc: Simply a Bear :rfc:

    Walt's Keeper Conundrum

    By Andrew Dickson

WALTER SMITH admits dropping Neil Alexander from his team was 'harsh' - and says it's now up to Allan McGregor to prove it was the right decision.

The Rangers manager reinstalled former Scotland keeper McGregor as his number one for the 4-1 win over Falkirk.

Doing so was hard on Alexander, who has performed well in recent months to the point he was on the bench for Scotland during the week in Norway.

The ex-Cardiff man came into the team last season and barely put a foot wrong as he helped the Light Blues win the championship.

As such, finding himself amongst the substitutes again would have been difficult to accept - and Smith understands why he might be frustrated.

The manager said: "It was an awkward decision to make and it was harsh on Neil, who has been excellent for us.

"I just feel long term that going with Allan is the way but he and everyone else knows he will have to maintain a consistency of play if he is to keep his position.

"As I say, it was tough on Neil but I had to make a decision. The good thing is we have two good keepers to choose from.

"Now they both know that whoever is playing has to perform at a high level to stay in the team."

  • SQUAD SIZE BIG WORRY FOR SMITH

    Sunday August 16,2009
    By David Leggat

WALTER SMITH fears injuries could wreck Rangers’ hopes of retaining the title and making progress in Europe.

And he has admitted that if his resources are stretched to breaking point – especially at the heart of the Ibrox rearguard – he will be forced into playing players out of position.

Rangers, whose precarious financial position means they have not made a single signing to consolidate their status as SPL champions and Scottish Cup holders, appear particularly vulnerable in the centre of their defence where they have gone into the season with only Madjid Bougherra and David Weir as recognised specialists.

But, while Smith remains comfortable with his squad, he is already looking to who he could call on as cover should either of those two suffer injury.

Smith said: “It doesn’t look as though there will be any movement of players coming in, and that means a run of injuries would worry us a bit.”

Such is the cash crisis which continues to engulf Rangers that even if Celtic fail to make it to the knockout stages of the Champions League, adding an extra £2million to the television bounty for the title holders, Smith harbours no illusions that his situation would alter.

He said: “I don’t think that would be enough to change things, though it would be welcome money.

“However, we have got a good squad, providing we are not hit by a run of injury problems.

“As far as cover at centre-half is concerned we will not have Kirk Broadfoot back until October, but Lee McCulloch and Sasa Papac can both play there.”

And it is McCulloch that Smith appears to be ready to turn to should the need arise – and not just as a centre half.

The Gers boss added: “He is like Nacho Novo and Stevie Naismith as he can play in a number of positions.

“Lee played at centre-half last season and he has played there in important games and played well.

“In pre-season he has also played for us in the midfield, sitting just in front of the back four and I’m not really sure what his best position is as he can also play wide on the left of midfield or at centre-forward.”

But there is no chance of Smith plunging highly-rated young centre-back Danny Wilson into the thick of the action just yet.

He said: “It’s a bit early for him as he is still only 17, but I hope to give him a game or two.”
