    McLeish plots £6m Rangers spree

Alex McLeish will make Allan McGregor and Kris Boyd priority signing targets in the summer if he is given the backing of the Birmingham City board to remain in charge. He is also interested in Barry Ferguson.

McLeish is aware that Rangers' financial situation means they will be unable to turn down substantial bids for leading players and The Herald understands that he will resurrect his interest in signing Boyd, after a £3m move collapsed in January because of the player's wage demands. Birmingham are also in the market for a long-term replacement for goalkeeper Maik Taylor and could get McGregor for around £3m.

The prospect of procuring a trio of Rangers players is less likely. McLeish remains an admirer of Ferguson but the deposed captain is understood to be considering a lifestyle change in Australia. The 31-year-old is unlikely to play for Rangers again after damaging a calf muscle in his comeback game for the reserves against Hearts at Forthbank.

After three serious operations, and a welter of criticism for his part in the Cameron House chaos, Ferguson has also considered walking away from football altogether. In any case, McLeish already has two experienced central midfielders in Lee Bowyer and the captain, Lee Carsley.

Birmingham secured their return to the Premier League with a 2-1 win against Reading on Sunday but McLeish's future is still shrouded in uncertainty. He is desperate to prove himself in England's top division but his relationship with managing director Karren Brady has been affected by adverse comments made by her in her newspaper column and programme notes.

Brady blew him a kiss after promotion was secured but McLeish will require more than a public show of affection before equipping his squad for the Premier League. He is concerned the board will not provide enough funds to give the club a fighting chance of avoiding instant relegation back to the Championship. McLeish will seek clear the air talks with Brady and David Gold, the owner, and, if satisfied, will set about strengthening his squad.

In a recent interview with The Herald, McLeish spoke of the likelihood of working with Boyd again. He signed the poacher from Kilmarnock from £400,000 in January 2005 and remains an admirer of his scoring prowess.

Birmingham will have to pay more than the £20,000-per-week wages offered but having secured a £50m windfall for promotion, they are in a stronger financial position to meet his demands.

Boyd, who has scored 30 goals already this season and recently broke the 100-goal mark for Rangers, has reiterated his intention to stay at Ibrox but the club's financial position may dictate otherwise.

McGregor is another Rangers would be prepared to lose for the right price. He has been demoted to Neil Alexander's back-up for his behaviour on Scotland duty and McLeish is in the market for a goalkeeper. Taylor will be 38 in September and McLeish could be reunited with two former charges for Rangers and Scotland if the price is right.

  • Gers consider Bouazza bid

Rangers are considering making a summer move for winger Hameur Bouazza, skysports.com understands.

The Algerian international has just helped Birmingham City to promotion after finishing the season on loan at St Andrews.

The Fulham man began the year on loan at Charlton but then switched to the Blues.

The former Watford star is now due to return to Craven Cottage - but he does not feature as part of Roy Hodgson's long-term plans.

A number of clubs are now considering moves for the 24-year-old left-sider, with Birmingham still a possible option.

However, it is believed his fellow international Madjid Bougherra - who is currently starring with Rangers - has tipped off his club about Bouazza and they are now looking at a summer bid.

  • Rangers could miss out on summer signing target Hermann Hreidarsson

RANGERS could miss out on Icelandic international defender Hermann Hreidarsson if they fail to clinch their first title in four years.

Gers want the Portsmouth star, who has 82 caps, to join them on a summer Bosman move just six months after Celtic approached him.

But any move for Hreidarsson - who faced Scotland in the recent World Cup qualifiers - hinges on the Ibrox club clinching the £10million bounty for automatic entry to the Champions League group stages by winning the SPL.

West Brom and newly-promoted Wolves want Hreidarsson and both can offer the defender better wages.

But the lure of playing in front of 50,000 at Ibrox every week appeals to Hreidarsson.

His agent Olafur Gardarsson said: "I've had contact from Rangers who are keeping an eye on him.

"They are a massive club with big ambitions and he'd be keen to speak to them but it could depend on how the league finishes."
