  • On The Mend

RANGERS' injury list is showing no signs of clearing just yet - but a host of stars could be back in action by the time the SPL split begins on May 2.

Sasa Papac is the only player of the seven currently sidelined with various ailments who might feature at Hibernian on Sunday.

The Bosnian defender is now walking normally again having received stitches in his foot after he had to limp off during the first half of last Wednesday's 2-1 win at St Mirren.

He faces a race against time to prove his fitness before kick off at Easter Road but the Light Blues management are hopeful he'll be given the green light to return there.

DaMarcus Beasley is more likely to be available again for the Scottish Cup semi-final with St Mirren a week on Saturday and he is out of the trip to Edinburgh.

The American is still struggling after sustaining a blow to his ribs in Paisley but he could be cleared to return for the forthcoming rematch with Gus MacPherson's side.

Lee McCulloch is another who might play in that game after it emerged his calf problem is not as bad as was first feared.

The former Wigan star is making good progress and since coming off in the latter stages of the 1-0 win at Falkirk nine days ago, he has made a notable improvement.

Kyle Lafferty, who is not yet back in full training despite newspaper reports claiming he is, may play again as early as the home clash with Celtic on May 9.

Much depends on how he does when he starts running again but it is hoped he will be able to play some part in the title run-in.

As yet, however, there is no timescale being given for when Kenny Miller and Kirk Broadfoot can be expected to come back.

Of course, Kevin Thomson will definitely miss the rest of term as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury and he'll be back in action after the summer.

But the news a number of other players aren't far from being fit again is a further boost for Rangers manager Walter Smith after his patched-up squad won three times last week.

  • A Race Against Time

SASA PAPAC and Kenny Miller are hopeful of returning to the Rangers squad for Sunday's trip to face Hibernian at Easter Road.

Bosnian defender Papac missed last weekend's 3-1 win over Motherwell with a gash in his foot, an injury sustained against St Mirren on April 8.

He trained normally at Murray Park this morning and looks likely to be passed fit to feature in the capital.

Whether he comes straight back into the squad is another matter, however, as Steven Whittaker did well in his left-back position against the Steelmen.

One option could be to move Whittaker onto the left side of midfield against his old club but it appears Steven Smith has done enough to retain his place in the team.

The 23-year-old made his first appearance in 51 weeks last Saturday and showed plenty of good touches - if a little rustiness too - in his 73-minute outing.

Smith was deployed in the same position against Aberdeen's reserves in midweek and scored a penalty in a 2-1 win at Auchenhowie.

That impressed manager Walter Smith and it is understood he'll stay involved in the capital.

Miller has not played since Scotland's 3-0 defeat in Holland last month and his last Gers appearance was two weeks before that in the League Cup final.

He has seen a specialist about the hamstring problem which has been hindering him lately and he has reached a point where he could be ready to play once more.

That comes as good news to boss Smith as he looks for competition to fit strikers Kris Boyd, Nacho Novo and Andrius Velicka.

Kirk Broadfoot, Lee McCulloch, DaMarcus Beasley, Kyle Lafferty and Kevin Thomson are all out for the crucial clash with the Hibees.

But former captain Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor are available for selection again after their two-week suspensions from the club ended.

The pair returned to training today but are lacking match sharpness so it seems the best they can hope for are places on the bench.

Minute ersetzte Whittaker Thomson. Whittaker markierte in der 90. Minute noch das 4-0. Das war Kevins 11. SPL game dieser Saison.

    Papac Concern For Gers

Walter Smith was delighted to see Rangers close the gap at the top of the SPL at Easter Road but admits the victory has come at a cost with Sasa Papac taking a knock which could rule him out of forthcoming matches in the title run-in.

The Bosnian international looks to have suffered ligament damage to his knee although the Gers gaffer faces an anxious wait to find out the extent of the problem.

Papac returned the starting eleven for today's 3-2 victory at against Hibs having needed stitches to an ankle wound picked up against St. Mirren and Smith is hoping his new injury is not as bad as first feared.

He said: "Kris Boyd has taken a wee knock and should be ok but we have concerns for Papac as he took a sore one to his knee.

"Hopefully it will settle down but we think there might be ligament damage there. It might not be major but we will have to wait and see."

  • Injury Not Serious

    By Andrew Dickson

SASA PAPAC should be fit for the SPL title run-in after he was assessed by the club's medical staff this morning.

The Bosnian defender came off 13 minutes from the end of yesterday's 3-2 win over Hibernian at Easter Road with a knee problem.

Sasa Papac and Hibs' Jonaton JohanssonAfter the game there were fears he had sustained ligament damage and had that proved to be the case, his season would be over.

But after reporting to Murray Park this morning, he is walking normally has been told he could be back in training again later this week.

Papac is suspended for Saturday's Scottish Cup semi-final with St Mirren in any case so he has time on his side and is likely to be in contention to play Hearts on May 3.

Assistant Ally McCoist said: "The worst scenario would have been that Sasa had ligament damage and that would have been a major concern if that was the case

"But we're optimistic it's stiffness more than anything and hopefully he'll be okay. He has been seeing the physio this morning and we're hoping the problem isn't too serious.

"Sasa hasn't had his troubles to seek lately after he needed stitches in his foot against St Mirren a couple of weeks ago.

"Now he has a knee knock but he's a hardy soul and we're keeping our fingers crossed for him."

  • Ferguson Injured

Barry Ferguson has limped off just two minutes into his first game since he was made available for selection again by Rangers manager Walter Smith.

The former Ibrox captain, appearing for Tommy Wilson's reserves against Hearts at Stirling Albion's Forthbank Stadium, was injured in the early stages of the game.

Ferguson appeared to hurt himself as he went to make a block tackle on Jambos winger David Templeton on the Main Stand side.

He was immediately replaced by teenage midfielder Stephen Stirling and his departure comes as a real blow to the 31-year-old.

Determined to win his place back in manager Smith's plans, coming off so early is an obvious setback for Ferguson - although it remains to be seen how serious the knock is.

TOMMY WILSON expects Barry Ferguson to be unavailable for Rangers' next two games after he came off injured against Hearts' reserve team today.

The former club captain hurt his calf less than two minutes into the game at Forthbank Stadium, which ended 0-0.

Barry Ferguson, RangersInitially it seemed he had pulled up as a result of a block tackle he made but the problem emerged in a separate incident just after that.

Ferguson left the ground with strapping around the injury and second-string coach Wilson anticipates he'll miss first-team games with St Mirren and Hearts at least.

He said: "Barry just felt his calf pop. I spoke to him yesterday and he was really up for the game so I was really disappointed when he had to come off.

"He was desperate to get back to action and has played for me a couple of times in the reserves this season when he was coming back from his ankle injury.

"He is a great professional and he's great to have around the place for the young players to look up to. His influence rubs off on them.

"The doctor has examined him and strapped him up and I think he may have torn a couple of fibres in his calf muscle.

"However long that keeps him out for I'm not sure but I wouldn't imagine he'll be fit for this weekend or the week after."

  • Fergie's Season Over

    By Andrew Dickson

BARRY FERGUSON'S season is over after a scan revealed he suffered a torn calf muscle in yesterday's reserve game against Hearts.

Barry Ferguson in action at Forthbank before he limped offThe former Rangers captain limped off after two minutes of the 0-0 draw with the Jambos at Stirling Albion's Forthbank Stadium.

Ferguson has since been assessed by medics and test results have shown he has a small tear in his right calf.

As such, he is expected to be out for between four and six weeks and that rules him out of the title run-in.

That's a huge blow for the 31-year-old, who had been keen to re-establish himself in the Light Blues squad after his recent two-week suspension.

Ferguson joins a string of other Rangers players who are currently unavailable because of various problems they have.

Kevin Thomson, Kirk Broadfoot, DaMarcus Beasley, Lee McCulloch, Kyle Lafferty and Sasa Papac are all injured at present.
