  • Sasa Derby Boost

    by Lindsay Herron

Sasa Papac is on course to return to the Rangers line-up for Saturday's Old Firm showdown.

The Bosnian defender missed out on yesterday's 2-0 win over Hearts as a result of a knee injury but he should be fit take his place in the left back slot.

Madjid Bougherra will also be back after his one-match suspension and Kirk Broadfoot could even be knocking at the door as he returns to top team training this week.

With Kenny Miller and Kyle Lafferty already back in the squad, boss Walter Smith has considerably more options than he did a couple of weeks ago.

Smith told rangers.co.uk: "Sasa has a chance of being fit. He has a knee injury. We thought he would be fit for the Hearts game but he just failed to make it so I imagine he would be OK for Saturday.

"Kirk Broadfoot is also back in training this week but whether he will be ready for the game or not we will have to wait and see how he progresses."

  • Broadfoot unlikely to make return

Kirk Broadfoot admits he is unlikely to feature again for Rangers this season as he continues his recovery from a metatarsal injury.

The defender has been out of action since the Co-operative Insurance Cup final defeat to Celtic in March.

He is now resigned to playing no part in the climax to the season as Rangers chase an SPL and Homecoming Scottish Cup double.

He told the Herald: "I kept coming back and it just got sorer and sorer, to the extent I wasn't doing myself justice any more and my performances were dropping.

"I would like to say there is a chance of playing again this season but realistically I have brought myself to realise I won't be.

"If there is, then that is a bonus but what I don't want to do is jeopardise next season."

  • Papac Old Firm Doubt

    by Lindsay Herron

SASA PAPAC is losing his battle to be fit for Saturday's Old Firm showdown but boss Walter Smith will give him every chance.

The Bosnian defender, who has been such a steady player for Rangers this season, is still feeling the effects of a knee injury.

The situation looked as if it was easing in the early part of the week but it now looks doubtful for Papac.

Smith said today: "He is a doubt for the game but we are still hopeful. We will know more tomorrow."

Steven Whittaker played in the left back berth last week against Hearts with Christian Dailly on the right. However, Stevie Smith could slot in there if required.

Meanwhile, Kirk Broadfoot has gone to see a specialist in London in an attempt to get to the bottom of his foot injury.

His chances of playing again this season seem limited but Rangers will wait for the specialist's report.

  • Smith: Barry will have part to play

Rangers manager Walter Smith has revealed deposed skipper Barry Ferguson could yet have a part to play in the title run-in.

The midfielder was initially told he had played his last game for the Ibrox club when he was stripped of the captaincy for his part in the 'Boozegate' affair which ended his Scotland career.

Smith then had a change of heart about the player's future at Rangers only for Ferguson to suffer a calf tear just two minutes into a reserve match last month which appeared to bring his season to a premature end.

However, the 31-year-old was back in training with the rest of the squad at Murray Park earlier on Thursday.

And, although unlikely to have any part to play in Saturday's Old Firm derby, Smith does expect him to feature again this season.

He said: "This was his first day back training with the rest of them and was a lighter day's training.

"He is progressing but needs a few more days' training before he is up to match fitness.

"I would hope that would be in the next few days so obviously Saturday's game comes a little bit too early for him.

"Lee McCulloch had the same injury and, when he came back, he went back out with the calf strain again.

"But hopefully once Barry comes back that will be him fit and he would be fit for us in the remaining games of the season."

Meanwhile, Smith claims he has "no problem" with assistant referee Tom Murphy running the line in Saturday's showdown with Celtic despite comments made earlier this season.

Smith was furious when the linesman disallowed a Kris Boyd goal for offside in a goalless draw against Motherwell back in November.

Speaking at the time he said: "We didn't finish well and the one that we did finish through Kris Boyd was a poor decision from the linesman. I think it was quite clear it was onside.

"Mr Murphy was quick to allow a Scott McDonald goal at Celtic Park and was quick to disallow that [Boyd goal]."

The Rangers boss escaped punishment from the Scottish Football Association for the remarks and insists the incident is now firmly in the past.

"I've got no problem with anybody officiating the game," he said.

"Whatever I said about Mr Murphy before is finished with now.

"He has officiated at other matches we've had since the Motherwell game and I've got no problem with him officiating in this one."

Celtic boast a single point advantage at the summit of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League heading into the clash at Ibrox.

And, while acknowledging the importance of the game, Smith insists branding the encounter a "must-win" game would be disrespectful to the other teams still to face the Old Firm this term.

"It would be showing a disregard to all the other teams if you were to say that was the case," he said.

"We have three games to play afterwards and the teams we have still to play have all given us extremely difficult matches over the season.

"Sometimes I think, with the focus on the Old Firm, that gets forgotten.

"I don't think there is any getting away from the fact it's a vitally important game for both the teams if they hope to win the championship.

"But you always have to keep in mind that you have to show respect for the games you have left as well."

Asked what fans can expect when Celtic come calling, Smith added: "That's the one thing about the Old Firm games, you never know.

"Whatever plan you set out, you usually find it can change quite quickly.

"This is obviously a very important one and we are bound to see a little bit of tension, some nerves. It's natural, if you didn't have that, there would be something wrong.

"I hope we see a good game. A lot of the matches we have played recently have been, in my mind, excellent games.

"I don't agree with a lot of criticism that has been placed in front of the Old Firm for the manner in which the games have been played.

"I think some of the recent games have been excellent."

  • Verletzung war wohl doch nicht end of season-like.

  • Edu Fit For Hibs - Papac Not

    By Andrew Dickson

MAURICE EDU has been passed fit for tomorrow's crucial SPL trip to Edinburgh, where Rangers will face Hibernian.

There had been concerns about the American's fitness after he was injured in a clash with Celtic's Glenn Loovens during the first half of Saturday's 1-0 derby win.

The 23-year-old sat out training today as he was given more time to recuperate ahead of the game at Easter Road.

But manager Walter Smith insists he will be ready for the latest chapter in Gers' bid for the title and that's a massive boost for the manager.

Edu gave an excellent Old Firm performance at the weekend and scored the winner the last time the Light Blues played in Leith on April 19.

Smith said: "Maurice seems okay. He missed training this morning but he'll be fine to play in the game tomorrow.

"He has done well since he came in but he hasn't surprised me. I thought it would take him the whole season to settle, as it has done with a number of players.

"Kyle Lafferty is another who is in a very similar situation and Maurice especially has handled this last part of the campaign really well."

While Edu is fit and available, it seems Bosnian defender Sasa Papac won't make the trip through to the capital.

Although he was initially sidelined after he sustained a gash in his foot at St Mirren last month, it's a knee injury he picked up on his return at Hibs that keeps him out.

Smith added: "It doesn't look like Sasa will make it. Again, he has been a little bit slow to recover from his knee injury.

"Aside from that, everybody else who has been available and playing for us in the last few weeks is fit. Mo was the only one who missed training but I'm certain he'll be fit."

  • Kenny Back For Gers

KENNY MILLER has declared himself fit to face Aberdeen in tomorrow's massive SPL showdown at Ibrox.

The striker missed Wednesday night's 1-1 draw with Hibs at Easter Road due to a hamstring problem but is ready to return for the club's penultimate game of the season.

With a win imperative for Rangers Walter Smith will be delighted to have Miller back in his plans and the Scotland star is desperate to get on the scoresheet and erase the disappointment of missing his side's midweek trip to Edinburgh.

He said: "It was very frustrating not to be involved against Hibs.

"The game against Celtic last weekend was my first start for a while but my hamstring flared up again after that.

"It took a few days for it to settle down but I am fit now and will train with the lads today.

"Hopefully I can be in the starting eleven against the Dons."

Andrius Velicka is the only striker that will not feature this weekend due to an illness but Sasa Papac should join Miller in the squad having recovered from a knee injury.

  • Kirk KO Confirmed

    By Andrew Dickson

RANGERS have confirmed Kirk Broadfoot will be sidelined for the next six months after he had surgery on his left foot last week.

The Light Blues defender was seen by a top specialist in London and the operation revealed he had a rare problem which could have led to arthritis.

Broadfoot is now on the mend and will spend the next six weeks in a cast before starting his rehabilitation three months from now.

Then it will then be another three months before the player can expect to be pushing for a first-team place again.

It is understood the problem developed because of a stress fracture Broadfoot suffered previously that didn't heal properly.

As a consequence, the 24-year-old will miss both the end of this season and the start of next one, including the opening rounds of Gers' new European campaign.

"It's a real blow," Broadfoot told the Daily Express. "It was bad enough missing the climax to the title race but now I will be out for the start of next season.

"I'm absolutely gutted as I thought it was just bone bruising but they say these things make you stronger.

"When the specialist opened up my foot the bones were rubbing together and if it hadn't been picked up I could have ended up with arthritis.

"The specialist also said my bones were bruising because they weren't strong enough to take my body weight.

"Because of that, he had to shave away a bit of bone and put three screws in to strengthen it."

  • Rangers striker Kenny Miller books treatment date with top German doctor

Rangers striker Kenny Miller will make the trip to Germany next week for a consultation with one of Europe's top sports medicine experts over his long-term leg nerve problem.

But Ibrox boss Walter Smith will have his in-form front man back and available for the Homecoming Scottish Cup Final with Falkirk.

The Scotland international will see Dr Hans Wilhelm Muhler-Wohlfahrt in Munich over the recurring injury, with the striker requiring injection treatments over the summer.

Getting his kicks: Walter Smith hopes injured striker Kenny Miller could be back in action for Rangers for next week's Hampden cup final against Falkirk

Miller missed the visit to Hibs last midweek after playing 90 minutes against Celtic, but has been passed fit for the title decider against Dundee United at Tannadice.
